Research

The AORN Foundation is pleased to announce the funding of a collaborative research project between AORN and Dr.  AkkeNeel Talsma, from the University of Michigan School of Nursing.   Based on a grant award through Medline Industries, Inc., the objective of this innovative research project will be to further the understanding of the impact of OR nursing activities and clinic system factors on adverse events in the OR and surgical patient outcomes.  Findings from this research project, An Evaluation of Perioperative Processes of Care and Patient Outcomes, hold the potential to have a national impact on the safety of surgical patients.

Evidence-based research is fundamental to quality patient care and should be the foundation for perioperative nursing practice. In today's health care environment, clinicians can no longer assume that the old way of doing things is the right way. They must ask the difficult questions related to the risks and benefits associated with costly interventions or treatments. Health care consumers and insurers depend on evidence-based research to demonstrate the effectiveness of state-of-the-art treatments. Every procedure and step must be carefully considered for its contribution to health outcomes.

In a continuing effort to improve patient outcomes, the AORN Foundation provides funding for research studies that impact surgical safety and outcomes through the AORN Research Grant Program.
