AAASC and FASA to merge

AAASC and FASA, the nation's two largest ambulatory surgery center associations (ASCs), will merge to provide a unified voice and improved services to address the growing challenges and opportunities ASCs face, according to an announcement released Oct. 5 by the American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (AAASC) and FASA.

As of January 1, 2008 AAASC and FASA will become one organization called Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA). This merged association will be based in Alexandria, Va. and governed by a Board of Directors made up of leaders from both organizations, as well as two new directors who do not come from either of the existing boards.

The education and research arm of the merged association will be known as the Ambulatory Surgery Foundation. Chaired by David Shapiro, MD, this Foundation will conduct the ASCA's annual meeting in San Antonio, May 14-17, 2008. By combining AAASC's and FASA's annual meetings, attendees and exhibitors will be able to enjoy an enhanced educational and networking experience, according to the announcement released by AAASC from the association's executive director, Craig Jeffries and FASA President Kathy Bryant.

Bryant will assume the role of chief executive officer of the new ASC association and, after supporting the transition, Jeffries will step aside from any staff responsibility.
