Information technology linked to better health outcomes

Patients treated at hospitals that use information technology (IT) systems are more likely to have better health outcomes, according to a new Florida State University study that appears in the November/December issue of the Journal of Healthcare Management.

The study sample included a wide range of public, private, rural and urban hospitals and used patient safety indicators to measure the effect of IT systems on patient outcomes.

Specific to perioperative care, the study found that deaths as a result of post-operative infections and postoperative respiratory failure decreased for patients in hospitals that use IT systems in their treatment processes.
Overall, study authors found that hospitals properly using IT networks are best able to ensure that clinicians receive critical information at the point of care to assist physicians in adhering to proven clinical strategies that improve patient safety and prevent medical errors.
