Legislative principles update

A set of proposed revised legislative principles were discussed in October at grassroots advocacy trainings hosted by AORN's National Legislative Committee as part of AORN state council meetings in Georgia and Washington.

The original legislative principles developed to be used in evaluating allied health legislative initiatives were approved by the House of Delegates during AORN's 2007 Congress in Orlando, Fla.

In July, acting on a recommendation from the National Legislative Committee, President Mary Jo Steiert, RN, BSN, CNOR, and AORN's board of directors formed a task force to consider issues related to implementing the legislative principles and to provide recommendations to the AORN board of directors.

Task force members included Terri Aldama, RN, CNOR, CRNFA, Karen Rustermeier, RN, BSN, CNOR, Joan Spear, RN, MBA, CNOR, Ruth Vaiden, RN, CNOR, CRNFA(E), AORN board members Jane Kusler-Jensen, RN, BSN, MBA, CNOR, FABC, and Rhonda Anders, RN, BSN, MSM, CNOR, and the nine members of the NLC.

The task force met in August and in September the group proposed revised principles, as well as a glossary of related terms.
