Ambulatory Infection Prevention Course

Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) staff and administrators will find critical information in this course to help them meet CMS requirements for a credible infection prevention and control program in the ambulatory setting. The four-module course follows the CMS surveyor worksheet, focusing on the observations and assessments frequently made during a regulatory visit to an ASC. Surveyors monitor for compliance and credibility of an ASC’s infection prevention program collecting information about how the center delivers services such as:

  • Intro Infection Prevention in ASCs
  • ASC Hand Hygiene
  • ASC Injection Practices
  • Perioperative nursing care of the patient
  • Sterilization and reprocessing
  • Hazardous waste management

The four modules of this course contain rationale and supporting evidence for the parameters of a successful infection prevention program that addresses:

  1. Sterilization and high-level disinfection, including a section on reprocessing of single-use devices
  2. Hand hygiene practices including monitoring and suggestions to improve compliance
  3. Critical environmental infection prevention practices
  4. Practices related to point-of-care devices and safe injection practices

The course should be used by all ASCs who want to ensure that they have implemented a quality infection prevention program that has perioperative safe patient outcomes as a result. The course is appropriate for all staff, administrators and physicians who provide services in the ASC setting.
