Biography and Election Statement
JANE FLOWERS, RN, MSN, CNOR, is a perioperative clinical manager for obstetrics/gynecology, urology, plastic surgery, and neurosurgery at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, Maryland. She earned her diploma in nursing from the MacQueen Gibbs, Willis School of Nursing, Easton, Maryland; her bachelor of science degree in nursing from Salisbury University, Salisbury, Maryland; and her master of science degree in nursing administration health care management from Georgetown University, Washington, DC.
Flowers has been a perioperative nurse for 28 years and a member of AORN for 28 years.
She is a member of
- AORN of the Lower Eastern Shore (1998-present),
- AORN of Baltimore (2003-present),
- the Maryland/Washington, DC State Council (1998-present),
- the Cardiothoracic Specialty Assembly (1998-present),
- the RN First Assistant Specialty Assembly (1998-present),

- the Educator/Clinical Nurse Specialist Specialty Assembly (2000-present),
- the General Surgery/Gynecology Specialty Assembly (2006-present),
- the Minimally Invasive Surgery & Lasers Specialty Assembly (2007-present),

- the Rural/Small Hospital Specialty Assembly.
She was a member of
- the Pediatrics Specialty Assembly (2006-2007).
Flowers has attended Congress 10 times in the past 10 years, each time as a delegate.
Flowers received the AORN award for Outstanding Achievement in Perioperative Clinical Nursing Practice (2004), a Maryland Nurses Association Outstanding Clinical Practice Nurse Award (2000), and a Nurse of the Year Award from the Maryland Nurses Association District 4 (1999).

She was

- a member of the Magnet Facility Task Force (2005-2006),
- a member of the National Committee on Education (2004-2005),
- a member of the Nominating Committee (2003-2004),
- a member of the Awards Committee (1999-2001), and
- President of AORN of the Lower Eastern Shore (1998-2001).
Flowers is a member of
- the American Nurses Association (1998-present) and
- the Maryland Nurses Association (1998-present).
She was a
- representative to the Maryland Commission on the Crisis in Nursing (2000-2007),
- member of the Maryland Board of Nursing Task Force on RNFA Issues (2003-2004), and
- member of the Urology Nursing Society (1998-2002).
In her community, Flowers has been
- a Blackwater Ironman Triathlon volunteer/supporter (2001-2007).
- a community dog show judge (2002, 2004-2007),
- a buyer/marketer for The New Card and Gift Shop (1998-2003),
- a Cambridge/Dorchester County Christmas Parade Committee member (1998-2002), and
- campaign treasurer for Tom Flowers for County Council.
ELECTION STATEMENT. AORN has established itself as a premier professional perioperative nurses' organization. AORN is recognized for its commitment to perioperative practice, safe and quality patient care, education, and our membership. Our members are the heart and soul of AORN. They provide the skills, knowledge, and commitment that have secured the successful journey of AORN.
Meeting and exceeding members' expectations is essential to the ongoing success of AORN. As a volunteer organization, our members demand that AORN work to provide them with services that enhance our professional practice. Our members expect AORN to utilize research, best practices, and critical thinking skills in establishing our standards and guidelines. It is expected that AORN work with legislative bodies and other health care regulatory agencies toward patient and staff safety. Our members make a difference every day by giving of themselves to AORN, our communities, and each other; in exchange, AORN has to work for them.
Leadership requires a comprehensive knowledge of AORN: our people, service, finance, growth, and commitment to quality. Leadership demands a vision to ensure that AORN will continue meeting the needs of our members. Leadership demands that our Board have budgetary skills to secure the financial growth of AORN. To lead AORN, our leaders promote perioperative nursing, advancing technologies and what defines our practice.
I am a working perioperative nurse. I am passionate and committed to the success of AORN. As your Secretary, I have worked hard to develop my leadership and communication skills to successfully guide AORN into the future.
