AORN Tool Kits

AORN tool kits offer practical tools to help address the critical issues impacting the ambulatory surgical setting including template documents, guidelines, education materials, and more. Some tool kits offer free contact hours for AORN members upon completion of the appropriate forms. AORN tool kits can be accessed at no cost by AORN members:

  • Ambulatory Surgery Center: AAAHC Institute Patient Safety – AORN would like to acknowledge AAAHC for developing these tool kits and making them available to our perioperative colleagues.

  • Ambulatory Surgery Center: Hand Hygiene – resources to supplement your current processes to improve hand hygiene practices.

  • Correct Site Surgery – implement the Joint Commission’s Universal Protocol™ and access surgical checklists from the World Health Organization and AORN.

  • Environmental Cleaning – educate team members about the recommended practices to clean the perioperative environment.

  • Fire Safety* – raise awareness of surgical fires and supports planning fire prevention and response strategies.

  • Human Factors in Health Care – use an evidence-based approach to assist with the development and implementation of a human factors program in the perioperative environment. It supports research, planning, design, and execution of a team-training program.

  • Just Culture – implement a just culture that fosters reporting and analysis of medical errors, leading to patient safety.

  • Management of Surgical Smoke – learn about the hazards of surgical smoke and implement surgical smoke evacuation practices.

  • Medication Safety – keep current with perioperative medication safety.

  • Patient Hand-Off – standardize hand-off communication among caregivers.

  • Perioperative Efficiency – optimize perioperative patient flow, operational efficiency, starting surgeries on time, and improve room turnover with an emphasis on quality and patient safety.

  • Safe Patient Handling – learn the correct and safe way to move patients and equipment in the OR.

  • Sharps Safety – reduce the risk of sharps injuries in the OR with policies, procedures.

  • Workplace Safety – learn how to create and maintain a safe perioperative work environment

Clinical Practice Support

Find clinical answers to your questions and get help implementing AORN Recommended Practices with help from expert perioperative nurses who have extensive experience in ASC settings. Nurses from AORN's Center for Nursing Practice are involved in developing the standards, recommended practices, and guidelines and can assist with practical ways they can be applied in an ASC.
