Scope of Practice

Role Description 

• Limited direct patient care under direct supervision of RN. Depending on year of training, may include:
• Teaching patients and families self-care
• Performing assessments
• Administering medications and treatments
• Planning, implementing, evaluating and documenting care

Work Setting 

• Surgical clinics
• Hospitals
• Ambulatory surgery centers

Required Education / Preparation 

• Student in an accredited school of nursing

Preferred Education / Preparation 

• AORN believes there should be one level for entry into nursing practice. AORN believes the minimal preparation for future entry into the practice of nursing should be the baccalaureate degree. (AORN Position Statement)
