Perioperative Nursing Specialist

Reports To: Director, Evidence-Based Perioperative Practice

Position Summary:
Responsible for providing consultative services regarding perioperative nursing practice to members and non members. Author AORN publications including recommended practices and clinical issues columns. Serve as a resource to headquarters staff on perioperative nursing. Collaborates in the design, development, and implementation of AORN products based on surveys and focus groups conducted by the segment leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Clinical editor/author of AORN publications in collaboration with the assigned members of committees and /or Subject Matter Experts.

  • Provides perioperative consultative services by telephone, internet, fax, and correspondence to educate and promote standards of practice and recommended practices. Areas of consultation may include: clinical/technical practice, human resource and materials management, infection control, environmental hazards/patient safety issues, perioperative nursing management, quality assessment and improvement, regulatory and accrediting agencies requirements, and evidence-based practice.
  • Maintains current knowledge of perioperative nursing practice issues. Reviews current research literature and updates clinical, technical, and management products and services.
  • Engages in on-going assessment and evaluation of the nursing practice needs of the AORN membership and perioperative practitioners.
  • Shares new information related to practice issues with staff.
  • Contributes to AORN publications, including Recommended Practices, Clinical Issues column and others as assigned.
  • Designs and implements processes/programs to meet the practice related needs of AORN members using online consultation resources.
  • Acts as a resource regarding perioperative nursing practice to AORN internal departments (e.g. Education, Publications and Library Services, Government Affairs) and external organizations.
  • Serves as staff consultant to committees, task forces and specialty assemblies of the Association, as assigned: works with chair of the committees or task forces to guide work of the committee/task force including work plan and budget, serves as clinical expert for specialty assemblies, and mentors development of volunteer leaders.
  • Represents AORN at identified organizations and functions as assigned (e.g. The Joint Commission, AAMI, AAAASF, CDC HiCPAC, NIOSH, AIA.)
  • Presents and creates podium and poster sessions at educational and other events.
  • Participates as a team member by: initiating and maintaining a consultative/collegial relationship with peers, volunteers, AORN staff and other business entities, participating in orientation of new staff members, serving as a mentor to peers and other Association staff, establishing goals, setting priorities and meeting defined metrics, self-evaluating progress toward pre-established goalsparticipating in interdepartmental work teams, and ensuring confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • RN with Master's Degree required; MSN preferred
  • Experience as Infection Preventionist preferred
  • Certification as CNOR and or Infection Preventionist preferred
  • Minimum of three years management, education, infection control, informatics or advanced practice experience in perioperative nursing
  • Knowledge of AORN standards and recommended practices
  • Knowledge of regulatory issues and bodies
  • Comprehension of management theories and principles of adult education
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in working with multidisciplary teams
  • Ability to problem-solve, plan collaboratively, and demonstrate professional accountability
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft applications (eg. Excel, Word, Power Point, Outlook) and the Internet
  • Demonstrates and holds others accountable for demonstrating organizational values of communication, quality, innovation and collaboration

Working Conditions:
Non-smoking office environment, using a computer, telephone and other office equipment daily. Attendance at scheduled meetings as required. Ability to travel as needed to support departmental and Association functions.
