Recommended Practices

The new AORN Journal series on implementing AORN recommended practices is designed to bridge the gap between standards and execution. These will include:

  • The RP Summary, which can serve as a reference, a visual aid, a means to resolve disputes, and material to help prepare for the CNOR exam.
  • The RP Implementation Guide, which focuses on a single recommended practice document, describing significant changes, areas of risk or concern, elements of compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements, and strategies for successful implementation.

Implementing AORN Recommended Practices for Prevention of Deep Vein Thrombosis

One to two people per 1,000 are affected by deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism in the United States each year. Strategies for implementing the recommended practices include:

  • a multidisciplinary approach to protocol development
  • education and guidance for patient assessments and administering DVT prophylaxis
  • appropriate resources and DVT prevention policy and procedure information readily available in the practice setting.
Hospital and ambulatory patient scenarios have been included as examples of appropriate execution of this recommended practice.
