Surgical Services Management Certificate Speaker Bios

The Surgical Services Management Certificate program (SSM) is designed for new and emerging leaders of the surgical services suite including novice directors and managers, as well as charge nurses, supervisors and others aspiring to the management role. Business managers have also found the content invaluable. Participants do not
need to be a RN. A team of nationally-recognized perioperative industry experts will lead the program, share their expertise and guide participants in building fundamental
knowledge in six managerial areas.

Communications and Relationship Management

In her session, Chard will review effective negotiation skills that may be used in a multidisciplinary environment. She will also instruct participants on effective methods mangers may use to foster collaborative, interdisciplinary relationships. Also, she will provide participants with tools for evaluating organizational effectiveness in perioperative services.

Human Resources Management

Battié will review the key aspects of human resource management in the surgical services setting. She will discuss the impact of the current nursing shortage and review strategies nurse managers can use to reduce its impact. Battie will describe the benefits of successful recruitment and the interview process, identify key components of a comprehensive orientation program and various approaches to staff scheduling, as well as provide methods for assessing staff competency.

Professionalism

In this session, Wyatt will lead a discussion of what professionalism means in the discipline of nursing, particularly as it relates to perioperative nursing management. He will identify ethical standards of nursing practice and discuss how participants can apply concepts of professionalism to current nursing management practices.

In her session, Thompson will explore the basic concepts of leadership and how to differentiate between leadership and management. Thompson
will instruct participants in how to utilize productivity methods and forecasting. Participants will also learn how to manage resources and implement
cost containment strategies. They will also develop a personal model of leadership that they can implement in their organization. Finally, Thompson
will facilitate a discussion on the change process.

Christensen will review of the key aspects of financial management as they relate to perioperative services departments. In this session, participants will learn how to develop an operating budget, the business foundation of a surgical services department. Participants will also learn how to utilize
productivity methods and forecasting, key drivers of efficiency. Finally, participants will learn tools for managing resources and implementing cost
containment strategies, which are critical for managers to master in order to meet today’s economic challenges.

Stobinski will begin his session with a discussion of the current conditions affecting the surgical services workplace environment. He will help participants differentiate regulatory and accrediting agencies and why it is important to comply with professional and accreditation standards.
Participants will also learn helpful metrics that determine effective surgical services outcomes.  Finally, Stobinski will lead participants through a discussion of the importance of the coordination of work processes so as to effectively manage the surgical services suite.
