Safe Environment of Care

Introduction

Maintaining a safe environment of care for patients and health care workers in the perioperative setting is critical. This module will address recommendations to identify and minimize hazards in the perioperative environment, including musculoskeletal injury, fire safety, electrical equipment, alarms, warming cabinets, medical gas cylinders, waste anesthesia gases, latex, chemicals, and hazardous waste.

Purpose

At the end of this course, the perioperative RN will be able to identify and minimize potential hazards to staff and patients in the perioperative setting.

Objectives

  • Identify potential hazards in the perioperative environment.

  • Identify ways to minimize potential hazards in the perioperative environment.

  • Understand recommended nursing care practices to promote a safe environment for patients and health care workers in the perioperative environment.

Course Requirements

This course consists of three modules with a total of 62 questions. To receive 1.5 contact hours for this course, you must achieve mastery of the content and submit an evaluation as instructed at the end of the course.

Contact Hours

The 1.5 contact hours for this course will expire November 1, 2015.




Accreditation 

AORN is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

AORN is Provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider Number CEP 13019.

AEU 

This program is approved for 1.5 hours of AEU credit by BASC provider #0102.
