Workshop - Positioning (Session #1567)
Perioperative nurses today face the challenge of correctly positioning patients, as well as a heightened focus on reducing the risk of OR acquired pressure ulcers. This session will explore the evidenced based risk and preventative measures, positioning equipment, the importance of conducting a skin and risk assessment, as well as discuss the evidence based criteria that may be used for product evaluation and selection. Throughout the workshop, there will be ample opportunity to apply your new knowledge during hands on positioning labs and use of the equipment with the adult and pediatric surgical patient. We will also present methods for developing and measuring staff competencies in positioning the surgical patient and discuss the nurses liability related to positioning.

Workshop - Evidence Based Practice/Competency Development (Session #1581)
This workshop will explore the origins of evidence based practice including how to appraise and critique research studies and interpret ranked guidelines. Then the speaker will move into using these evidence based practices as a basis for developing staff competencies for your facility. You will have the opportunity to work in small groups on competencies you may already have or new ones you want to develop.

This session will review how the health care industry is continuing to grapple with more regulating bodies and standards, and providers are struggling to balance the concerns of quality care with more economical business practices. As new federal laws eliminating Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements for hospital-acquired conditions (HAC) make their impact, the pay-for-performance (P4P) model is already beginning to shape the way hospitals deliver services. Also impacting care is the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). The time is now for all health care organizations to embrace this change.

Dealing with Lateral Violence in the OR (Session #3039)
Bullying and violence in the perioperative setting is still a major issue throughout the country. During this session, we will explore ways to assist the team to understand how to prevent bullying and violence in the perioperative setting. We will also explore how to work with the team once an event has occurred. We will discuss how to hold a debriefing and give team feedback to decrease the damage of bullying and violence.

Gain 'em, Train 'em & Retain 'em: How to Fill The Void (Session #3046)
A five hospital system in Portland, Oregon, is creatively addressing the critical need to fill open positions and plan for the future with projected staff retirements, while providing an optimal learning situation for those senior nursing students requesting an OR practicum. A pilot program of new graduates, internal hospital candidates, and senior nursing students was launched in April 2007. A weekly blend of three didactic days, skills labs, hands-on with sets of surgical instrumentation, hands-on practice, and return demonstrations is combined with two days of actual mentored/precepted clinical immersion to reinforce the information. This is Phase I of the Perioperative Pilot program and runs for a maximum of eight weeks.
