Leadership Conference Program Outline / Schedule

Perioperative leaders, in formal and informal leadership roles, are challenged daily to improve quality and patient safety in environments that often struggle to change. The collaboration of all team members is a key component to success. The faculty members for the conference are internationally known for their leadership success, innovative strategies, and their impact on health care. The information presented during the conference will help you prepare for enhancing your leadership skills.

Friday, July 17

Welcome Reception and Tour of AORN Headquarters
Begin new friendships or connect with old friends as you ride the bus to the AORN Headquarters. When you arrive at AORN you will receive a warm welcome with a self guided tour program as you enter the AORN Headquarters building. You will have time to talk with fellow attendees, the AORN Board, association member leaders, industry partners, and AORN staff. You will also have the opportunity to view, first hand, some of the latest products and services that AORN is offering to assist you in promoting optimal outcomes for perioperative patients. Light refreshments served.

Member Leadership Development
As a member group leader, you are charged with successfully managing your individual member group, be it a chapter, specialty assembly, or state council. This breakfast session will prepare you with the know-how and tools to be successful. Learn about the latest recruiting and retention campaigns, and how your AORN Board of Directors liaison and Membership Committee can assist you. Member groups will be divided into small groups to provide for more direct discussion with your session leader.

The Patient Safety Battles
Charles Denham, MD
Improving patient safety is not easy in systems where there is organizational inertia and resistance of the people. Dr. Denham will provide insight on the significance of the patient safety movement and the courage needed by the leaders of the movement.

Dr. Denham is internationally known for his work in the field of patient safety. Dr. Denham has had a health care product and solution development career that has spanned over 20 years. His research has resulted in numerous product and process innovations in surgery, oncology, imaging, image guided surgery, pharmaceuticals, and ophthalmology. He has served on the editorial boards of journals as a technology application specialist and authored several works in basic science, managed care and medication management and safety. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Patient Safety.
 
He is a founder and Chairman of the Texas Medical Institute of Technology (TMIT), a non-profit medical research organization dedicated to drive adoption of clinical solutions in patient safety and health care performance improvement. TMIT sponsors numerous projects in patient safety and collaborates with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement for which Dr. Denham serves as a faculty member in the area of technology assessment and adoption. In 2006, Dr. Denham was ranked 31 in the top 50 most Powerful Physician Executives by Modern Healthcare.

Ms. Ramsey will provide an overview of the journey embarked upon by a health care facility to improve the quality of care delivery. The facility holds Magnet designation and earned the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. You will learn how organizational strategic initiatives are woven through the organization and the mechanisms used to integrate this measure throughout the organization. The role of the Perioperative Practice Council in improving quality will also be explored. Ms. Ramsey will describe specific initiatives that have been implemented and completed, as well as the impact of these initiatives on nurse satisfaction.

Universal Protocol and World Health Organization Checklist Summit

Do you have questions about Universal Protocol and the World Health Organization (WHO) checklist? The protocol and checklist were designed for different purposes. The panelist will discuss purpose of each, the components of the documents, and highlight what is required by the Joint Commission. The requirements of the two documents do not conflict, however, they are not the same. There will be a discussion as to how both documents can be integrated to further the goal of providing safe care and prevention of errors.

A Look Over the Horizon
Paul Keckley, PhD
As perioperative nursing leaders, it is important to understand the trends in health care related to public policy, economic initiatives, the impact of a new administration, and the overall impact of consumerism in health care. Dr. Keckley will provide a high level overview of a few of the critical issues perioperative leaders must understand.

Dr. Keckley is a health care economist, researcher, and policy expert whose 30+ year career includes leadership roles in the private sector and in academic medicine. He was Executive Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Evidence-based Medicine and taught in the school of medicine. He is widely considered an expert on application of evidence-based medicine to health system transformation in pay for performance programs, consumer-directed care, and assessment of practice variation. Keckley has authored numerous articles and three books. He has been profiled by “20/20,” CBS”s 60 Minutes,” CNN, Fox News, and The Wall Street Journal.
