An estimated 2 million Americans contract healthcare associated infections each year. 90,000 of these patients will die, which is more than the number of deaths attributed to breast cancer or automobile accidents annually. The problem is the situation is getting worse. Since 1975, the infection rate has escalated by 36%. Experts believe that the majority of these infections are preventable. This session will describe from a corporation and from a surgical services director's point of view, why addressing the spread of infections is absolutely necessary. Using a simple "ABC" multifaceted guide will yield the most successful program and save the most lives.

A Key to Managing Up:
Building Relationships with Your Boss

Phyllis Miller, MS, RN, SANE-A, CFN, FHCE
Bosses! We all have them. Some we love and some we hate, and they are one of the strongest influences over our job satisfaction. Do you want to know how to make that all-important relationship at work more effective? Or would you like to learn how to deal with a boss that you just can't get along with? If so, this session is for you! Come learn about how to manage this relationship better. You'll learn what makes your bosses tick (and ticks them off!) and what that means for how you work with them. You'll find out what you do that can make the relationship better or worse. The session includes developing strategies for dealing with a difficult boss as well as strategies from other fellow subordinates as to what worked and what didn't. Finally, you will leave with a plan of action that will put you in the driver's seat back home to either improve a relationship gone bad, or make a great relationship with your boss even better.

Session 4814
Bariatric Lap Banding in the ASC
Patsy Mitchusson, RN, CASC
Bariatric Lap Banding is being performed more frequently in ambulatory surgery centers across the country. Has your surgical center talked about doing Lap Banding? What are the things as a perioperative nurse that must be considered when doing these procedures at your facility? This session help prepare the surgical team to meet the needs of their patients and have a better understanding of the Lap Band procedure.

Session 4815
Malignant Hyperthermia:
"There Has to be a Better Way"

Melissa Helmer, RN, MSN, CNOR

Malignant Hyperthermia (MH) does not change, the symptoms and treatment are the same, the difference is the nursing perspective during a MH Crisis. A novice OR nurse's first time experience responding to a MH crisis "opened the eyes of a more experienced OR nurse" for the need of a revision to the MH cart. The new perspective is to have a more efficient MH cart with defined nursing roles to provide competent nursing care for the patient during a MH crisis.

Session 4816
Essential Aspects of Informed
Consent in the Ambulatory Setting

Anne Roy, RN, JD, CASC
Lack of informed consent occurs when a physician does not provide adequate information to the patient to make an informed decision. The purpose of this session is to take the mystery out of the informed consent process and explain the responsibilities of the ASC and to provide suggestions as to what elements need to be included in your policies and procedures.

Session 4820
Recall of Surgical Emergency Protocols
Mary Renee Khalar, RN, BSN, MBA, CNOR
Patient safety in the perioperative setting includes the ability to remember emergency protocols during crisis situations. Cardiac arrest, whether from ventricular fibrillation/ventricular tachycardia, asystole, or PEA, and malignant hyperthermia are generally low volume in most ORs. Due to the sporadic occurrence of these emergencies, it is often difficult to remember treatment protocols. This program uses an education technique, the Window Pane Learning Grid, that stimulates all forms of learning preferences. Using the "Grid" to review the emergency protocols will fuel staff members' different learning preferences to increase retention and recall of the algorithms.
