A Key to Managing Up:
Building Relationships with Your Boss

Phyllis Miller, MS, RN, SANE-A, CFN, FHCE
Bosses! We all have them. Some we love and some we hate, and they are one of the strongest influences over our job satisfaction. Do you want to know how to make that all-important relationship at work more effective? Or would you like to learn how to deal with a boss that you just can't get along with? If so, this session is for you! Come learn about how to manage this relationship better. You'll learn what makes your bosses tick (and ticks them off!) and what that means for how you work with them. You'll find out what you do that can make the relationship better or worse. The session includes developing strategies for dealing with a difficult boss as well as strategies from other fellow subordinates as to what worked and what didn't. Finally, you will leave with a plan of action that will put you in the driver's seat back home to either improve a relationship gone bad, or make a great relationship with your boss even better.

Teaching the MTV Generation
Michele Deck, RN, BSN, MEd, LCCE, FACC
Today's learners are consumers of television and the media. They aren't afraid to "channel surf," missing critical content and skill development, just as they do with the media. Their learning styles are changing, and we need to adapt to that trend to thrive as educators.

Session 4874
Anatomy of a Lawsuit

(Session 4870 Moved to 3:15 pm)
With growing concern about lawsuits in the health care industry, this session will focus on the elements necessary for a lawsuit, what are the frequent episodes occurring in the operating room (OR) that may develop into a lawsuit, and how the OR staff can minimize their risk of being sued.

Promoting the Use of the Perioperative
Setting for Nursing Students

Debra Shobe, RN, BSN, CNOR
Mary Ann Wehmer, RN, MSN, CNOR (new speaker)
Luci Hanus, RN, BSN, MEd, CNOR (new speaker)
How do we encourage nursing students to consider a career in the OR when they rarely get to experience what goes on behind closed doors? The answer is to work with your local schools of nursing and show them how basic nursing skills and care plan development can be taught and experienced in the perioperative setting. In addition, our nursing specialty offers many opportunities to develop decision-making, critical thinking, and organizational skills while working as an integral member of the surgical team. The speaker will discuss the tools and aids contained in the newly revised AORN Primer for Perioperative Education.

Session 4870
Copyright or Copywrong - Be Careful!
Claire Everson, RN, CNOR, CCAP
(Session 4874 Moved to 11:00 am)
As information and its methods of storage and transmission continue to expand dramatically, it becomes more important than ever to understand copyright law. Saying "I work for a nonprofit
organization" doesn't exempt us from this law. Since continuing education means providing current knowledge, educators, clinical nurse specialists, and managers are in a position to find copyright law either the means to that end or the grounds for legal action against them.

Moving from Sacred Cows to
Evidence-Based Practice
Lauri McCanless, MS, RN-BC, RNC, CNS
& Ellice Mellinger, RN, MS, CNOR
Sacred cows are found throughout nursing practice, and they are often emotionally charged topics of conversation. The Evidence-Based Nursing Practice (EBNP) movement has gained momentum in the last 10 years and is considered the "gold standard" for changes in practice. Various models of EBNP will be analyzed for their application to clinical nursing. A practical tool to guide nurses in their search for evidence will be described. The development process for the "EBNP Question/Search Form" used at University Medical Center MC will be explained. This practical tool to guide nurses in their search for evidence will be applied to projects completed by nurses in the perioperative setting.

This presentation will assist nurses to examine their practice critically, identify their personal "sacred cows," and provide a tool for systematic analysis of evidence to change practice. Moving nursing forward as a profession demands standards of practice that are based on evidence. EBNP has the potential to improve patient outcomes and patient/family satisfaction.

Session 4876
Critical Thinking in Nursing
Jennifer Bedick, RN, MSN, CNOR
Critical thinking is not an easy thing to do, but knowing what it is and how to do it are critical in today's health care environment. Magnet™ Buy-In: Convincing Your Staff
Melissa Helmer, RN, MSN, CNOR
Before you can educate the staff nurse regarding the 14 Forces of Magnetism, you must first convince them why Magnet™ status is important to your institution. The operating room staff can be one of the more difficult areas for Magnet™ "buy-in." You will need specific strategies that can assist you in convincing your staff of the importance for Magnet™ and the needed Journey to Magnet Excellence™. Once the staff nurse understands Magnet™ and accepts the Magnet™ journey, the next step is to maintain the Magnet™ momentum.

How to Keep Your Best Employees

Tim Rutledge, PhD
This presentation outlines the steps that facilities need to take to identify their key employees and create engaging employment experiences for them. In a seller's job market (fewer job seekers than job openings) talented employees have lots of choice in where they work, and the head hunters are trying to pry them loose. The presenter will share a tool to explore the elements of employee engagement. Participants will learn how to identify who their key employees are and how to "build walls" around them through engaging management behavior.
