Welcome Concurrent Sessions Session 4781 Informatics 101 Marion McCall, RN, BBA, CNOR, CPHIT Gift in Kind Provided by GE Healthcare As the use of Clinical Information System and/or Electronic Health Records for perioperative services becomes standard, nurses are expected to use, understand and maintain these applications; but much of the terminology and processes around information technology are foreign to them. This session will offer an introduction to some of the theory, terminology and IT structure that can assist perioperative nurses as they assume roles in system selections, project implementation/management and/or maintenance of an existing system. Session 4782 Workflow Issues - IS Implementation Kathy Hayden, RN, MSN, CNOR & Pauline Robitaille, RN, MSN, CNOR Gift in Kind Provided by McKesson Technologies Solutions in support of Kathy Hayden This session will explore the multitude of workflow issues that exist during an information systems implementation. You will learn how critical it is to address and resolve workflow issues prior to developing, customizing, or implementing your information system. |

Concurrent Sessions Session 4901 (new) Aging Perioperative Nurses: Retention Strategies Lydia Forsythe, PhD, RN, MA, MSN, CNOR & Jeanne M. Lattanzio, RN Gift in Kind Provided by The J2 Group (Session 4783 Cancelled) This session will explore the training and implementation required for an online system in the perioperative arena using informatics roles and perioperative nurses as the informatics leaders. In particular, we will take a look through the lens of the expert operating room nurse, exploring the cultural stigma of aging and the positive development of changing roles. We will use the nurses’ experiences and ideas to discuss potential roles and ways to encourage and teach this population in ways that are creative and sustainable for their own success and the success of the preoperative departments. Session 4784 OR Informatics - 10 Steps to Success Barbara Harris Gift in Kind Provided by PeriOptima Informatics projects in the surgical environment exert major pressure on department resources, including budget, staff, and scheduling. By planning ahead and executing these ten basic preparatory activities, OR management can mitigate this pressure and ensure an optimal outcome. The time interval between the decision to install, upgrade, or replace a surgical information system and the start of actual implementation activities is often lengthy, sometimes extending for a year or more. This interval should be used to complete critical pre-implementation activities that can help ensure a trouble-free implementation and optimal performance of the new system. |

Software and Industry Presentations Sponsored Lunch/Concurrent Sessions Unibased Systems Architecture (USA) A User’s Perspective: What Differentiates Surgery Management System Vendors Presented by George M. Giorgianni, National Director for Perioperative Solutions This session will outline key factors you can use to differentiate surgery management system vendors. Whether implementing new, or replacing, a surgical information system should be easy to use. Focusing on the end user, you will be presented with actual peer comments and a third party evaluation system that places vendors on a level playing field for comparison. In addition, a short demonstration of USA’s periOperative Resource Management System (ORMS) will highlight some of the unique features of their application that make it efficient and easy to use. Concurrent Sessions Session 4785 Managing Loaner Instrumentation Rose Seavey, RN, BS, MBA, CNOR, ACSP This presentation will help perioperative informatics professionals understand the importance of having written policies on managing loaner instrumentation for patient safety. It will cover recommended practices from AORN and AAMI as well as the ASHCSP/IAHCSMM Position Paper on Loaner Instrumentation. In addition the presenter will show how bar coding technology can be used to document and track loaner sets of instruments. Session 4786 Clinical Documentation and the PNDS Barry Sweigert, RN & Katherine A. Halverson-Carpenter, RN, MBA, CNOR Gift in Kind Provided by New West Consulting, LLC, in support of Barry Sweigert Are you using your clinical documentation system to its maximum advantage? In this session you will learn how to maximize the benefits of clinical documentation and how you can easily implement PNDS into your system. The presenters will also discuss the current tools available for a successful implementation. |

Break Concurrent Sessions Session 4787 Catch the Wave of the Future: RFID and Inventory Control Elaine Palm, PhD In this engaging discussion you'll learn the latest about what some say is the future of tracking technologies. Starting with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) 101 and proceeding through the growing list of RFID applications in the health care setting, the speaker will provide an entertaining look at what's available right now and what the future holds. There will be a case study using one inventory tracking tool to show the real-time, hands-free advantages of RFID over barcodes. But RFID is not the panacea for everything and this session will also address areas where alternatives make more sense. Session 4788 Return on Investment - Making Your System Work for You Barry Sweigert, RN Gift in Kind Provided by New West Consulting, LLC This discussion will focus on the business implications of a Perioperative Information System. You will learn how to improve cost control measures and determine if you are returning a maximum return on investment (ROI). |
