Saturday and Sunday will be devoted predominantly to the new Intensive Education Workshops*. The Intensive Workshops (half day, all day, and 1.5-days long), will provide you with detailed knowledge needed to serve as a resource on specific patient safety issues as well as knowledge to enhance your professional development and further your career. Poster Display Sessions
Saturday 12 - 5 pm and Sunday 7 am – 5 pm
Research/Evidence-Based Practice and Clinical Improvement/Innovation poster displays will be available for daily viewing starting on Saturday, March 14. The number of Contact Hours you may earn for viewing posters will be determined by January 5, 2009. The total number of poster sessions and Contact Hours available will be determined by the number of posters accepted. Contact Hours and exact viewing times will be listed in the Congress Program provided in the attendee bag.

Writing for publication - is a way to articulate the value of the perioperative nurse's contribution to patient care. This half-day session will cover the basics of writing and provide insights into the process of publishing a manuscript. Experienced authors and editors will offer personal attention and feedback on your ideas, explain the steps in the writing process, and help you to develop a preliminary draft that will bring you closer to your goal of publishing!

Working toward a paperless standardized health care record in the future is quite often overwhelming. In this interactive half-day workshop, you will be introduced to the PNDS language and encouraged to use the nursing language while implementing these basics into your perioperative documentation. Participants are encouraged to bring their facility’s documentation record to fully understand how to integrate the PNDS into their day-to-day clinical documentation, whether their facility uses computerized charting or paper charting documents. You will learn valuable building blocks of information to promote and teach PNDS to your colleagues and integrate a seamless transition to your current or future electronic health care record.

Medical Laser Safety Officer Certificate Program

Session 1331 (Sat) and Session 1339 (Sun), 11.0 total CH for the 1.5-day program, Track:C
This one-and-a-half day certificate course is designed to give OR personnel a basic foundation in laser biophysics and tissue interaction. You will learn laser safety protocols according to the ANSI Z136.3 Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care Facilities standard, as well as indications for specifi c patient selection when using different laser wavelengths. Instruction is accomplished through didactics, lecture, and discussion. At the end of this course, the participant will be able to discuss laser biophysics and tissue interactions, discuss the laser safety standards according to ANSI, list the effects and characteristics of laser wavelengths on tissue, discuss the current treatment modalities with lasers, list the indications for specific patient selection when using the different laser wavelengths, explain the operational skills with the different laser delivery devices, and list the advantages of the laser. Upon completion of this course, attendees will be eligible to take the Certified Medical Laser Safety Officer examination through the Board of Laser Safety. Attendance at both sessions is mandatory to receive your Contact Hours and certifi cate of completion. A gift-in-kind was provided by The Laser Institute of America.
In order for an individual to qualify to take the CMLSO examination, the following requirements must be met:
- Candidates must have a 4 year degree from an accredited institution or be a licensed medical professional or they may either have a 2 year AS degree or high school diploma and advanced education and training in their individual area of practice.
- One (1) year of experience with laser safety or acting as LSO, having performed the specific responsibilities outlined in the ANSI Z136.3 Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care Facilities standard.
- Two (2) reference statements or letters of recommendation from the applicant's supervisor and/or other knowledgeable person(s) stating that the applicant has performed the specific responsibilities of an LSO. (View the Reference Questionnaire)
- A certificate of completion of a Laser Safety Officer course. (In special cases, this requirement may be waived by the BLS upon application with supporting documentation.)
Application for the CMLSO exam may be obtained by contacting the BLS office.
A nonrefundable fee of $50.00 must accompany the application. Any application submitted without the appropriate fee will not be processed and will be returned to the applicant.
Application Deadlines - All applications for the CLSO and CMLSO exams must be postmarked no later than two weeks prior to when you wish to take the exam.

Advanced Practice Nursing Seminar

This 1.5-day program will provide the Advanced Practice Nurse the neded updates to practice at the advanced level. Cinical Topics include Pharmacotherapeutics, Pathophysiology, and Advanced Physical Assessment and more. Reimbursement, prescriptive authority, insurance, billing, and components of practicing as an independent practitioner will be discussed. Role and scope of practice, grant writing, and publishing will also be identified as key points during this intensive program specifically geared for the Nurse Practitioner, Clinical Nurse Specialist and any Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) who wishes to keep up with new updates that affect advanced practice nursing.

Sterilization Certificate Program

Sterilization practice and technology have changed dramatically in the last decade. This course will present the science behind sterilization, and an overview of available sterilization technologies. Cleaning, inspection, packaging, sterilization technology and cycle selection and quality monitoring will be presented as well. Hot topics including extended cycles, loaner instruments and flash sterilization will also be covered. This course is appropriate for the Sterile Processing manager as well as the perioperative nurse who must fl ash an instrument in preparation for surgery.

Traumatic injuries affect multiple body systems. In this intensiveseminar, you will learn from a group of experts the multi-trauma sequelae of principles to prioritize treatment for both operative and nonoperative approaches in the multi-trauma patient. We will practice delivering a presentation, critique a presentation, and provide constructive feedback to a presenter.

The intent of this four hour workshop is to review the overall threat of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and discuss strategies to prevent HAIs in the perioperative environment. Attendees will be divided into groups and given different situations that may occur in the perioperative environment that will challenge best practices required to prevent HAIs. Given a specific scenario, each group will work as a team to select key strategies that would reduce the risk of infection, identify anticipated roadblocks/resistance to the implementation of the strategies, and propose activities to eliminate the roadblocks/resistance. Each group will report out on the outcome of their deliberations to workshop attendees.
