Ideas to Celebrate Perioperative Nurse Week
- Organize a Teddy Bear Hospital. This is a terrific way to create an understanding of the perioperative nursing profession. The Teddy Bear Hospital is where kids bring their stuffed animals to learn about patient care, meet real nurses, and get to touch and feel medical instruments as their much-loved teddy bears get the care they need to be all better…
- Show off your expertise. This is a good time of year to invite the media to your facility for a live demonstration of hand washing techniques -- remember to check the facts in the updated AORN Recommended Practices for Hand Hygiene in the Perioperative Setting.
- Host an Open House or Education Session. Invite students, pre-procedure patients, families, or the public to a class about Patient Safety in the OR.
- Honor your perioperative friends and colleagues by making a gift to the AORN Foundation. The Foundation will send a note in your name to the honoree.
- Demonstrate your commitment to the perioperative profession by joining the AORN Grassroots Network to support legislative priorities and initiatives of perioperative professionals.
- Collaborate with your colleagues and network with AORN members nationwide. Become an AORN Member Ambassador and be rewarded for each new member you recommend.
- Promote patient safety and address critical issues that impact perioperative nurses.
- Invite an elected official – local, state, or federal – to visit your OR. Health care reform is one of AORN’s legislative priorities. AORN is an active participant in the national discussion on health care change to promote the role of the perioperative registered nurses in achieving optimal patient safety.
- Host a fundraiser for the AORN Foundation to help support perioperative nurses. Donations to AORN Foundation funds continuing education, leadership development, patient safety, workplace safety, and new innovative programs.
