Periop 101: A Core CurriculumTM FAQs

RN at Computer

 We Set the Standard

so You can Raise the Bar

1.  When is the new Periop 101 available as an online course?

The Periop 101: A Core CurriculumTM online course is now available online.

2.  My current Periop 101 license expires in July 2008. May I transfer to the new online program before then?

Yes. Your facility may purchase the new Periop 101 program before your current Periop 101 license agreement expires. If applicable, AORN will prorate your current license agreement fee and/or unused prepaid student fees and apply the remaining dollar amount towards your new Periop 101 license agreement fee.

3. My current Periop 101 license agreement expires May 2009. Do I have to transition to the new online program before then?

Yes. The current Periop 101 CD-ROM/paper course is being discontinued for everyone as of August 1, 2008.

4.  How long will the CD-ROM/paper-based Periop 101 curriculum be available?

AORN will support the paper-based Periop 101 curriculum until August 1, 2008. Once your CD-ROM/paper license agreement expires, you must return the Periop 101 course materials to AORN as stated in your license agreement.

5. After submitting a Periop 101 License Agreement Order Form to AORN, what happens next?

Once we receive all 3 pages of your completed Master License Agreement Order Form, if you have not paid, we will then invoice you for your fees. Please note that the Master License Agreement must be signed by a nurse in a position of authority over the course, such as a Director of Surgical Services, Director of Periop Services, CNO, etc.

6.  What happens after we have completed the ordering process?

For a current or past licensee, you need to have completed your last class of students with the CD-ROM course. You also must return any and all property, including the student and facilitator CD-ROMs and any additional printed copies of the Perioperative Nursing Course 101 (as described in the license agreement) to AORN. Upon receipt of BOTH your actual payment (check or credit card) and the signed, original, 12-page license agreement, AORN will e-mail the contact person or Course Administrator at the email address provided with the information needed to start the Periop 101 Administrator Course. After finishing the Administrator Course, the Administrator will receive an e-mail with instructions to provide to the end users (students) to start the Periop 101 course. No end user can start the Periop 101 course until the Course Administrator has finished the Periop 101 Administrator Course.

7. What is included in the license agreement fee?

The following benefits are included in the Periop 101 License Agreement fee:

  • Access to AORN's learning management system (LMS)
  • Access to AORN's Periop 101: A Core CurriculumTM online course for a term of two (2) years. Click-and-print handouts are included in the course for students.
  • Free, automatic updates of course materials
  • Complimentary online Administrator Course for up to two (2) course administrators to coordinate learning and management of AORN’s LMS and the Periop 101 online course.
  • 40 nursing contact hours (based on 60-minute hours) for each RN who passes the final examination at 80% or greater.
  • BONUS! Offer for one year free AORN membership for the RNs in each class who pass the final exam. This offer is mailed to administrators for distribution to their students in the month following the students’ finish date (initial date on the certificate). If they are already AORN members, they can extend their membership free for one year.
  • BONUS! “Preparing the Preceptor” module is included at no additional charge for the first four preceptors per site and includes 2.7 nursing contact hours. The preceptor module posttest and evaluation must be completed for grading and awarding of contact hours.
  • BONUS! Complimentary listing in AORN’s Online Perioperative Nursing Program Directory as a licensed provider of the course - a great recruitment resource!
  • BONUS! Discount code good for the term of your license agreement on the purchase of recommended videos for the course from AORN's partner, Cine-med. Videos are available in VHS, DVD, and CD-ROM formats. An online video subscription option is also available.

8. Are there any other fees related to using the course?

Yes. Additional fees include the following:

  • $350 for additional course administrator registrations beyond the first two free ones. This fee includes the online Administrator Course and access to AORN's LMS and Periop 101: A Core CurriculumTM.
  • Periop 101 providers must purchase end user registrations to enroll learners in the Periop 101 curriculum. This fee gives learners access to their assigned Periop 101 learning modules. Facilities must purchase a minimum of 2 end user registrations when they purchase a license agreement.
    • If 2-10 seats are prepaid all at one time, the per-seat price is $350.
    • If 11+ seats are prepaid all at one time, the per-seat price is $275.
    • Additional seats may be purchased throughout the two-year term of the agreement with fees based on the number of seats purchased at the same time.
  • Review the Periop 101 Pricing 2007 page at the end of the Periop 101 information packet for more details.

9. Are there any other materials we need to purchase to implement the course?

Yes. The following textbooks are required for each student, which contain reading assignments included in the learning modules.

  • Perioperative Textbook Package (includes one copy of each: AORN Standards, Recommended Practices, and Guidelines and Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery) at a discounted package price. For current pricing, visit www.aornbookstore.org, search by ISBN, and type MAN-245 in the Enter Keywords box.
  • AORN also recommends 32 videos (available in VHS, CD-ROM, and DVD formats, as well as an online video library subscription) from AORN's partner, Cine-Med. These videos can be used to supplement learning, as well as to provide continuing education for other perioperative staff members. Licensees are eligible for a discount on the purchase of the video titles in VHS/CD/DVD formats for the two-year term of the license agreement.
    • The first video title is purchased at the full nondiscounted price.
    • If you buy 6-10 video titles, you get a 25% discount on the videos after the first one.
    • If you buy 11 or more video titles, you get a 50% discount on the videos after the first one.
    • If all 32 recommended video titles for the course were purchased at the AORN member rate with the 50% discount, for an AORN member it would cost about $1,787.50 + $35 shipping/handling UPS Ground Service.
    • You also can purchase the online video library subscription for the videos. It is $450 for an individual annual subscription (1 login for access) for AORN members and $600 for nonmembers. For an institutional annual subscription (50 logins for access), it is $1,200 for AORN members and $1,800 for a nonmember. These are introductory prices, so there are no further discounts for the online subscriptions.

View video content summaries and pricing on the Cine-med website.

    • Information about the online video library subscriptions is available. You also may view 1- to 2-minute demos of the videos from this page. To subscribe or ask questions, call Cine-Med at 800-633-0004.
    • Most of the 32 recommended, supplemental video titles for the course also come with independent studies that may be used as continuing education by any OR nurses at the medical facilities, with discounted group rates for larger numbers of nurses.

10. How long does it typically take for a student to complete the course?

End user registrations are valid for six (6) months, starting with the date the student registers and logs in online for the course. Completion times may vary due to class size, student experience, student availability, and resources. Administrators will still need to meet regularly with the students to accomplish additional important tasks, such as answer students’ questions from the textbook reading assignments and online learning modules, review the posttests, introduce facility-specific policies, complete some of the suggested group exercises together (including demos and skills labs), view the recommended videos, share war stories, and make sure module concepts are completely understood. And of course, the student’s clinical practicum/preceptorship will still need to be supervised by a preceptor.

11. Are end user registrations transferable?

End user registrations are transferable, but only if the end user has not started the first learning module. End user registrations become nontransferable once a student has started the first learning module.

12. What if our course administrator leaves?  Are administrator registrations transferable?

Administrator registrations are not transferable. If the course administrator leaves, your facility must identity a replacement and use one of the complimentary administrator registrations or purchase another administrator registration. In addition, the new course administrator must complete the mandatory online Administration Course prior to gaining access to AORN's LMS and the Periop 101 online course.

13. My hospital is part of a large hospital system. We would like to implement Periop 101 system-wide. Are the Periop 101 list prices negotiable?

AORN understands how expensive it can be to implement an education program system-wide. If your hospital system is interested in implementing Periop 101 system-wide, please contact us at 800-755-2676, Ext. 258. We will work with your hospital system to understand your needs and to develop a proposal.
