Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™
Modified OB Circulator Course

We Set the Standard So You Can Raise the Bar

Health systems are quickly recognizing that the labor and delivery suite is actually an operating room. This has escalated the need for the same perioperative education for RN OB circulators comparable to that of perioperative nurses in the OR department. To meet this need, AORN has modified Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ for the OB Circulator.

"To help ensure quality care in the L&D OR suite, education must be comparable to that of the main OR. Encouraging nurses who circulate in the L&D OR suite to participate in the Periop 101 curriculum is one step in the right direction."
Katie Schimmelpfennig, RN
Women's Center Clinical Instructor
St. Luke's Health System

The core content of Periop 101: A Core Curriculum™ is included in this program with only the Laser and Endoscopic Surgery modules being replaced by an OB-specific module. AORN developed the Periop 101 OB module in collaboration with St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Boise, ID and other subject matter experts.

This new module is intended to provide supplemental information for the OB RN circulator who is caring for the obstetric patient in the OB surgical suite. This information builds on the content of the core curriculum. “Special Considerations for the OB RN Circulator” should be accessed after the learner has successfully completed the required 23 modules of the Periop 101: A Core Curriculum.

Module objectives:

Upon completion of this module the nurse will be able to:

  • Identify how the nursing process is utilized in providing perioperative care.
  • List one special consideration that should be addressed in the OB surgical suite related to positioning.
