AORN / UC Denver Nursing Informatics Certificate Program
The Nursing Informatics Certificate consists of 5 graduate level courses (3 required + 2 electives) and totals 16 academic credits. The program is conducted entirely online and courses do not have to be taken sequentially. Students have the opportunity to interact, network, and learn with nurse colleagues from a variety of practice settings around the country. The core content and course work in this certificate program is conceptualized with the American Nurses Association's new definition of nursing informatics. Students are able to customize their education by selecting two courses in the decision support subspecialty or health communications subspecialty. Students must have a Bachelor of Science degree to participate in this online certificate program.

Program Overview and Benefits - Students will learn to:
- Use information management tools to support data driven decisions.
- Identify data and data sources for database decision making in health care environments.
- Use a systematic plan for the evaluation of an information system.
- Develop design specifications for an information system.
- Formulate strategies for evaluating and developing emerging terminology standards.
- Summarize the importance of codifying nursing phenomena for nursing practice, administration, research, and informatics.
Required Courses
Information Systems Life Cycle NURS6289 - I01 (4 credits)
Focuses on a structured approach to the selection and implementation of an information system. The five phases of the life cycle (planning, analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation) provide the framework for student to work in teams on structured exercises.Nursing Terminologies NURS6274-I01 (3 credits)
Introduces the concept of formalizing nursing language for more effective data management. Topics include nursing language, classification systems, minimum data sets, and terminology standard.Information Management for Decision Support NURS6304-I01 (3 credits)
Focuses on the identification, acquisition, analysis, interpretation, and application of data, databases, and decision-making strategies for health care.Two of the Following Four Must be Selected:
Database Management Systems NURS6293-I01 (3 credits)
Focuses on historical, theoretical, and application issues in the design and administration of a database management system. Explores theories and concepts of file and database structure.Knowledge Systems NURS6279-I01 (3 credits)
Focuses on a variety of knowledge systems including basic data analysis systems, information retrieval support systems, expert systems, and artificial intelligence.Topics include:
- Concepts of human knowing and strengths and limitations of human knowledge systems
- Computer-based decision support systems
- Emerging field of true artificial intelligence (AI) and potential applications of AI in health care
Health Communications NURS6273-I01 (3 credits)
Overview of theories and research related to interpersonal, organizational, and mass communication within a health context. Examines strategies and application for persuasion communication principles to health care practice, reviews health information campaigns, and examines new media in health communications.TeleHealth Applications NURS6284-I01 (3 credits)
Focuses on the design and application of telehealth principles to the delivery of health care. Highlights the evidence-based support for telehealth applications.
Tuition
Professional Development tuition is $400 per credit hour. See the registration form for additional fees.
