AORN to offer free tool kit
on periop teamwork training
"When the surgical team works well together, errors and other threats to safety can be communicated, prioritized and managed before an adverse outcome becomes a reality," said Linda K. Groah, RN, MSN, CNOR, CNAA, FAAN, executive director and CEO of AORN. "These tools will help healthcare organizations develop and establish consistent, sustainable teamwork models."
The patient and workplace safety benefits of implementing structured human factors team training programs in perioperative settings were demonstrated recently during a series of training sessions at five diverse surgical and procedural facilities across the country. The project was funded through a generous grant to the AORN Foundation by Kimberly-Clark Health Care.
Safer Healthcare, which implements high-reliability programs and training for such high-risk organizations as air ambulance operations and hospital clinical units, joined with the AORN Foundation in creating the content for the Web-based tool kit.
AORN's Human Factors Tool Kit includes:
- A primer outlining the objectives of implementing human factors-based team training programs in the perioperative environment and offering detailed implementation guidelines for managers to develop team training programs;
- Downloadable posters outlining checklists for successful surgical case team debriefings, listing Red Flag alerts that a clinical team's "situational awareness" may be degrading and providing tips for using SBAR (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation) communications techniques for exchanging patient information;
- An individual stress test to help team members determine whether they're likely to encounter stress-related problems in the workplace; and
- A bibliography of related human factors and team training reading materials.
