AORN will release revised, second edition
of the Perioperative Nursing Data Set

DENVER—A revised, updated edition of the Perioperative Nursing Data Set (PNDS)—a structured vocabulary used in uniformly documenting the practice decisions and interventions that lead to positive outcomes for patients undergoing surgical and/or invasive procedures—will soon be available from AORN.

While the underlying standardized PNDS data set hasn't changed, the newly revised Second Edition of PNDS contains a set of powerful examples illustrating how several perioperative nursing and informatics teams have benefited from implementing PNDS. The examples cover use of PNDS in various clinical settings, in orientation and educational programs for perioperative RNs, as well as in electronic health record systems and other record-keeping applications, including staff job descriptions and documenting staff competencies.

"The examples from actual practice broaden the reach of PNDS and help RNs understand how to apply it in actual job settings," said Carol Petersen, RN, MAOM, CNOR, manager-PNDS in AORN's Center for Nursing Practice. The data set supports perioperative Registered Nurses in the overall healthcare industry move toward evidence-based practice.

The PNDS is a database of specific terms, interventions and patient outcomes enabling researchers to evaluate more accurately the perioperative nursing care provided to patients and, thus, inform future perioperative nursing practice. A new chapter on the PNDS Dashboard also explains how the standardized database can help perioperative managers and facility administrators benchmark their performance internally and against results from similar external healthcare facilities.
