AORN and ANA Join Forces to Strengthen the Nursing Community

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and The American Nurses Association (ANA) struck a deal to provide all AORN members with individual affiliate, a non-voting status membership to ANA, effective July 1, 2008. The ANA affiliate membership will allow AORN members to connect with the resources and advocacy activities of ANA and the broader nursing community. View the media announcement.

ANA affiliate membership benefits include:

  • SmartBriefs - daily news feeds with stories from press across the country
  • Access to full ANA policy statements and publication archives
  • Access to CINHAL
  • Online journals such as American Nurse Today, The American Nurse and OJIN
  • Free and discounted CE
  • Unique content
  • Benefit programs that augment AORN's existing offerings

Through the agreement, all current and new AORN members will automatically receive ANA individual affiliate memberships beginning July 1st. This starting date coincides with a new arrangement the ANA and its Constituent Member Associations (CMAs) will have with United American Nurses (UAN) and the Center for American Nurses (The Center.) At this time, the CMAs will have direct relationships with the UAN and the Center, not through or as a result of ANA’s bylaws or policies.

AORN President Mary Jo Steiert and ANA President Becky Patton celebrate the new partnership.

"This is a critical time for the nursing community, and we recognize the need to foster close ties with our ANA partners. AORN is committed to strengthening the nursing community, but to make an impact we need to work together across specialties. An affiliation with ANA will not only benefit the perioperative community, but all nursing specialties as a whole," said AORN Executive Director Linda Groah, RN, MSN, CNOR, FAAN.

"AORN will continue to pursue direct positions on its legislative priorities," continued Groah. "However, we also feel it is important to support the efforts of ANA initiatives, including safe staffing and workplace safety, because these are important issues that impact all nurses, including perioperative nurses."
