Illinois ASCs May be Surveyed to the Recommended Practices
Publish Date: 10/30/2013
Earlier this fall, the Illinois Department of Public Health issued proposed updates to its ambulatory surgery center (ASC) licensing regulations. AORN was delighted to see that one of the proposed revisions would incorporate the AORN Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices (the “Recommended Practices”) into the ASC licensing regulations, meaning that Illinois ASCs could be surveyed to confirm compliance with the Recommended Practices. The proposed regulations referenced the 2012 Recommended Practices book. Because the Recommended Practices are evidence-based and often updated, AORN submitted written comments to the Department recommending that the final regulations reference the “then-current” Recommended Practices instead of the 2012 book.
The proposed regulations also contained changes regarding infection control, laundry, jewelry, surgical attire and traffic. AORN’s written comments on these matters are available here, and are intended to bring the Illinois regulations in line with the Recommended Practices. AORN’s government affairs department will monitor the regulations and advise members when the Illinois Department of Health issues its final regulations on this issue.
AORN’s Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices for Inpatient and Ambulatory Settings are available for purchase here.
