MEMBERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE

   Susan Bishop, BSN, RN, CNOR

As she climbed to the top of Mount Baker, Susan Bishop, BSN, RN, CNOR, thought about the friends, colleagues, patients and strangers battling breast cancer whose names were listed on a flag she carried to honor their memory, including those who were still fighting and those who had already lost their battle with breast cancer.

"Every step of the climb was difficult, it tested my body and my mind, but with each step I thought of the strength and courage it takes to fight breast cancer, and this helped me take another step," said Bishop as she explained her recent climb to the top of Mt. Baker in Washington state as part of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's benefit Climb to Fight Breast Cancer.

As a breast cancer survivor, Bishop knows how hard the struggle to fight breast cancer can be. As a perioperative nurse for more than 30 years, she also sees many patients who are fighting cancer.

"My patients with breast cancer are getting younger and younger. With more research, my family, friends, patients and colleagues who may have to face breast cancer in the future can hopefully benefit from better treatment that research funding can help to create," she stressed.

Through her fundraising efforts with her climb, Bishop raised more than $9,000 dollars and she participates in other breast cancer fundraising efforts to help support research. Through her facility at Group Health Cooperative health system in Seattle, Wash., Bishop also supports breast cancer awareness and early detection though regular screenings and breast self-exams.

She encourages AORN members to raise awareness about breast cancer and participate in local fundraising efforts to support cancer research.
