NOTES technique could ease abdominal surgery for patients
Several studies suggest the Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery could be a promising technique for outpatient procedures such as weight-loss surgery, gallbladder removal and appendix removal, according to a Forbes report.

A scar-free procedure, NOTES is performed by passing an endoscope through a natural orifice in the body, along with an internal incision in the stomach, vagina, bladder or colon. It could cause less pain than conventional laparoscopic surgery and offer a faster recovery time.

Findings were presented in early June at the Digestive Disease Week conference in Chicago. Studies were conducted at the University of California, San Diego and at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Nevada: No promises on medical safety
The director of Nevada's Department of  Health & Human Services says he can't promise whether new legislation will prevent a future hepatitis C outbreak like the one experienced in the Las Vegas area outpatient healthcare facilities in early-2008, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

New laws signed in late-May now require the state health department's assignment of a nurse to accompany inspection teams "specifically to observe infection control" procedures at facilities. It is a step Nevada lawmakers hope will become a national model for health inspections, though there is no guarantee that it will permanently correct infection prevention measures at all facilities.
