And the National Time Out Day video finalists are...

Since its announcement in the April issue of AORN Management Connections, AORN's National Time Out Day video contest received 28 entries from facilities across the country.

Dozens of videos were reviewed by clinical editors of AORN recommended practices and evaluated according to criteria set for compliance using either the WHO check list or the components of The Joint Commission Universal Protocol depending on the facility's respective procedure. The judges selected ten videos that were strong in meeting each component of the check list and, while minor discrepancies from the AORN recommended practices were considered as tie-breakers in the assessment, they did not prevent a video from being recommended for use on the AORN Web site.

The 10 finalists are:

•    Children's Hospital Boston (2:14)
•    Exempla Saint Joseph Hospital, Denver
•    Jennersville Regional Hospital, Westgrove, Penn.
•    Marion General Hospital, Marion, Indiana
•    Memorial University Medical Center, Savannah, Ga.
•    NYU Langone Medical Center, New York, N.Y.
•    Saint Joseph Mercy Health System, Howell, Mich.
•    University Hospital Cincinnati
•    Florida Hospital, Orlando, Fla.
•    White River Medical Center, Batesville, Ark.

Additionally, a panel of three judges from AORN's Center for Nursing Practice department named two video entries as honorable mention:

•    Christus St. John Hospital, Nassau Bay, Texas
•    Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina, Minn.

"The perioperative community demonstrated several things by their video submissions," said Sheila Mitchell, RN, BSN, MS, CNOR, AORN perioperative nursing specialist. "The commitment of the entire team to ensure patient safety in healthcare organizations is inspiring; their pride in sharing effective practices and implementation of standards that address optimal patient outcomes, and the willingness to be innovative and creative resonated in each entry."

Videos produced by the above hospitals will appear online as part of AORN's 2009 Correct Site Surgery Tool Kit.
