Plan the flight, fly the plan
I used to work with a chief operating officer whose background included being an officer and fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force. At meetings with hospital leaders, he would talk at length about how a strategic plan was essential to our hospital's success. He frequently quoted a sentiment I saw on pictures in his office, "Plan the Flight-Fly the Plan." At that time, analogies between military operations and health care didn't make much sense to me, but after participating in strategic planning with AORN for the past two years, it is clear to me that Dr. Holt had been right-our success lies in our ability to develop and implement a plan. We may not be entering into battle, but we are all participants in "the good fight" as we move to make advancements in health care.
At the 2009 AORN Congress, then-President Susan Banschbach talked extensively about AORN's strategic plan and how we will continue to focus on the five pillars of people, service, growth, finance, and quality as we "Embrace the Future." She outlined how AORN will boldly grow its business and support its members not in spite of economic challenges, but because of them. Banschbach emphasized how AORN's products and services must now, more than ever, meet and exceed the needs of our members.
When AORN's current President Patrick Voight picked up the gavel at the conclusion of the 2009 Congress, he began his term by affirming AORN's commitment to its members. His presidential theme, "Reaching the Peak of Perioperative Practice: Safety-Quality-Collaboration," is indicative of his commitment to "flying the plan." What separates AORN from other organizations is its ability to transition from one leader to the next and continue building upon and implementing the strategic plan. With our flight plan in place, we are set for success.
