Are you connected?

By Carina Stanton and Matt Gunn

Perioperative professionals are constantly seeking ways to communicate more effectively, whether to educate staff or prepare for a surgical case.

As news editors creating content for AORN ConnectionsAORN Management Connections and other AORN news offerings, we are also looking for effective ways to connect you to breaking perioperative news and practice information. That's why we recently attended the New Media Expo in Las Vegas and met with communicators who are using Web 2.0 concepts to create online content, such as Web video and audiocasts, blogs and online education resources.

For example, we met podcast creators from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Health and Human Services who are developing podcasts to disseminate important health information (visit www2a.cdc.gov/podcasts/ and www.aids.gov/podcast.xml).

We also met Shwen Gwee, a writer and podcaster whose Web site, Med 2.0 (www.med20.com) looks at how emerging technologies and new media trends are influencing science, medicine and pharmaceuticals.

"From the expo I was encouraged to see a lot more people… from the medical and science area that are willing to take the brave step of using these new technologies to advance what they're doing and help more people get access to good, important information in the medical realm," said Gwee. Listen to the full interview with Gwee.

On the subject of podcasts, have you heard AORN's new Perioperative News Minute podcast? This is our newest way to get you regular updates on perioperative news via audiocasts that you can easily listen to and share with colleagues.

As we develop new media formats, such as video and audiocasts to get you breaking news, we want to know how you are using Web 2.0 tools in your practice.

Do you use online media such as podcasts, blogs or a combination of these to communicate with your perioperative colleagues? Send an email to aornnews@aorn.org and tell us how you are using these online tools to share knowledge and find the information you need to keep up with the constantly changing world of perioperative practice.
