New RPs, updated Standards to be published in January
The 2010 Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices should be hitting the AORN bookstore in January, and will include several new Recommended Practices (RPs) as well as the new Standards.
Included in the print edition of the Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices will be the new RPs on Hand Hygiene, Electrosurgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery and Transfer of Patient Information. The Environment of Care RP has been updated to reflect a recent change in the ECRI Institute’s guidelines on blanket warmer temperature.
Additionally in 2010 the Standards will see their first changes in a number of years.
“Standards are not updated frequently,” said Ramona Conner, RN, MSN, CNOR, AORN manager for Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices. “We don’t touch them that often.”
The Standards were updated in 2010 in part because the American Nurses Association has also made changes to its Standards. The Standards and new RPs are also available through e-subscription.
A new section in the print edition will include all of the current position statements – something that has not been published in the Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices before. Additionally, the Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices will be published on CD for 2010, a version that has returned by popular demand.
