AORN Policy Statement on Sunseting of AORN Position Statements

All official AORN position statements and resolutions will sunset after five years unless reaffirmed by the AORN Board of Directors and/or ratified by the House of Delegates. The Board may determine that some resolutions (eg, "No smoking resolution," 1989) will become Association policy rather than remain in their original form. Courtesy resolutions will be archived after five years.

PROCEDURE

  • Each statement/resolution will have a sunset date published along with the adoption date.
  • Staff will bring sunset statements/resolutions to the Board of Directors at the spring board meeting in the year prior to sunset.
  • The Board of Directors will determine the need to ratify, revise, or sunset statements/resolutions. The Board also may elect to take no action. All action on sunsets, reaffirmations, and proposed revisions will be reported in the Board report as part of the business conducted at that meeting in order for the membership to become aware of work in progress.
  • If the statement/resolution sunsets through archive or becoming Association policy, staff will implement and no House of Delegates action will be needed.
  • If the statement/resolution is reaffirmed with no revisions by the Board of Directors, a new sunset date will be assigned and no House of Delegates action will be needed.
  • If the statement/resolution needs revision, the Board will determine the appropriate person(s), committee, or staff to propose the revision, which will be due to the Board no later than the fall board meeting. The Board will submit the revised statement/resolution to the House of Delegates at the next Congress for ratification. Once ratified, a sunset date will be assigned.
