AORN Safety Resources

AORN is highly committed to workplace safety in the perioperative environment, safe patient care, and compliance with safe work practices and standards. This includes providing perioperative nurses with access to online resources and up-to-date information.
  • Patient Safety First was launched in 2002 by AORN as part of the broader patient safety initative. With an emphasis on "Identifying, Collecting, and Developing Clinical and Education Resources," Patient Safety First helps clinicians in surgical and procedural settings provide safe patient care while following safe practices.
  • Workplace Safety addresses the many occupational hazards that pose risks to perioperative nurses. The information on this web page is designed to provide useful information for developing a safe work environment, including information on workplace safety practices, from AORN's alliance with OSHA. Also available is information gained from AORN's Memorandum of Understanding with NIOSH.
  • Emergency Management presents the importance of a heath care facility's preparedness for disasters of all kinds, from weather-related emergencies to mass casualty accidents. Links to valuable resources are provided, including online reference guides, articles and documents, along with websites on disaster readiness, biosecurity, infection control, and more.
  • AORN Tool Kits are practical resources that address critical issues impacting perioperative nurses from correct site surgery to surgical fire safety, Patient Hand-Off, and more!
  • Clinical Health Care Industry Representative Credentialing Criteria represent the joint best practices recommendation of several organizations. AORN and the contributing organizations propose the criteria to be considered as a national standard.
  • The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is offering a podcast series. AHRQ's mission is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans.
