| Surgical Smoke Evacuation Tool Kit |
Surgical smoke has been conclusively shown to be hazardous to the health of the surgical team. Equipment and supplies are available to effectively and easily evacuate this plume but compliance is still inconsistent. The purpose of the Surgical Smoke Evacuation Tool Kit is to educate perioperative nurses regarding the hazards of surgical smoke that negatively impact the health of the surgical team The goal of the Tool Kit is to assist perioperative personnel in their efforts to implement smoke evacuation practices in their individual health care organizations to protect the health of the surgical team and patients.

The Surgical Smoke Evacuation Tool Kit contains:
- An educational PowerPoint presentation on the hazards of surgical smoke
- A sample competency skills check list
- A sample policy and procedure
- A bibliography of smoke evacuation articles and research
- A link to the OR Product Directory which features vendors who sell smoke evacuation equipment, devices, and supplies
- Awareness Posters
The evidence-based items in this tool kit are made available to AORN members to help with the development and implementation of a comprehensive surgical smoke evacuation program in the perioperative environment. The documents and tools presented are meant to serve as a resource to help all perioperative personnel with the research, planning, design, and execution of a surgical smoke evacuation program.

Contact Hour Information
AORN Members may earn contact hours by completing the evaluation in the Surgical Smoke Evacuation Tool Kit. Simply download the Tool Kit, follow the directions, and complete the learner evaluation and answer sheet. Members may earn 0.5 free contact hours through December 31, 2010.
