Lobby Day Resources

AORN leadership has become more active with state legislators and regulatory agencies. Through AORN State Coordinators and State Councils, and often in cooperation with the state Nurse Association, many states are organizing advocacy Lobby Days. The purpose of the Lobby Day is to enable the perioperative RN to learn how to be an effective advocate for their profession and provide you with the tools necessary to be an effective participant when visiting with the state legislator or their staff.

On Lobby Day you may have three minutes or fifteen minutes with the legislator. These resources guide you on how to utilize your time effectively. By coordinating activities with a state lobbyist or a legislator willing to help with the education, you will learn how to interpret bills, protocol for your visits, how to tell your story effectively and ask for support. The importance of follow-up and thanking them for their time is also included as part of this education.

The resources provided here are designed to help your state produce a successful Lobby Day. Most of the information is based on a Lobby Day held in Michigan, but can be easily revised to suit your state. The AORN National Legislative Committee and Government Affairs are available to assist in producing a successful Lobby Day. While AORN does not support or endorse any one political candidate seeking public office, we encourage members to be involved as individuals and to utilize their knowledge in making individual decisions.
