Issues and Initiatives
The Department of Government Affairs monitors, analyzes, and responds to many legislative and regulatory issues that affect the AORN membership. Additionally, AORN will hire professional lobbyists in key states for proactive legislative initiatives such as passing state laws that keep the registered nurse in the operating room. AORN's Department of Government Affairs coordinates grassroots activities to advance public policy initiatives in the states. Individual involvement by AORN members is crucial for a successful initiative.
Each year, the president of AORN and the AORN Board of Directors requests that the Department of Government Affairs promote RN Circulator initiatives in the legislative or regulatory arenas of a specified number of states. However, opportunities may arise in other states that are not the specific target states for that year, and Government Affairs, with the support from local AORN grassroots networks, will pursue opportunities on a case by case basis.
The Department of Government Affairs also assists grassroots members in obtaining financial reimbursement for RNFAs at the state level on an opportunistic basis. Government Affairs offers legislative and lobbying support to members for issues related to workplace safety and patient safety when resources permit. Additionally, Government Affairs assists members in both the regulatory and legislative arenas to preserve and promote the perioperative nurse's scope of practice.
