Issues and Initiatives

The Government Affairs Department monitors, analyzes, and responds to the legislative priorities that affect AORN membership. Additionally, AORN will provide financial support for professional lobbyists in key states primarily to support enactment of RN as Circulator legislation.

Based on recommendation from the National Legislative Committee and the president elect of AORN, the AORN Board of Directors each year establishes legislative priorities that the Government Affairs Department will pursue in legislative or regulatory arenas. In 2009, these legislative priorities include RN as Circulator, Preserving and Protecting the Perioperative Registered Nurse's Scope of Practice, Supporting Workplace Safety and Patient Safety Initiatives, and Health Care Reform.

With the support of the National Legislative Committee and the State Legislative Coordinators, Government Affairs may identify additional activities to develop AORN grassroots networks and to pursue opportunities that support perioperative nursing on a case by case basis.
