About Sandra Burks, BSN, RN  

Sandra Burks, BSN, RN, received her BSN from the University of Virginia (UVA). She served as staff nurse and charge nurse in the coronary care unit at Duke University Medical Center, where she was responsible for training and supervising a nursing team involved in the care of critically ill cardiac patients. Ms. Burks subsequently serviced as clinical research nurse in a multi-site study sponsored by the National Institute of Health at Duke University Medical Center. Ms. Burks returned to UVA in 1991, where she joined the Thoracic Cardio Vascular Post Operative Unit as a Clinician III, functioning as charge nurse and orientation facilitator in charge of training new staff and nursing students. She joined the Tissue Adhesive Center (TAC) at UVA as clinical coordinator in 1997, and was responsible for protocol development, patient enrollment and consent, data collection and maintenance, and overall quality assurance in the Center's clinical trials. The mission of this research and development academic center was to promote the development of topical hemostatic agents and surgical sealants, and Ms. Burks participated in numerous research projects in this area. As associate director of TAC, Ms. Burks served as the project manager for the development of many areas of interest for the Center, overseeing administrative functions, coordinating research efforts, assisting in publication preparation, and organizing education conferences sponsored by the Center. Currently, she serves as the associate director of the Surgical Therapeutic Advancement Center (STAC) in the Department of Surgery at UVA. In this role, she is responsible for oversight and coordination of expanded research interests with pharmaceuticals, investigational medical devices, and biologic therapies impacting surgical patients and related clinical fields. She has published 10 scholarly articles in the area of topical hemostasis and surgical sealants. She is a frequent educator for nurses and allied health professionals on the practical issues surrounding the use of hemostatic agents and surgical sealants in both 'hands-on' and lecture format.
