Be sure to pack...

  • Business Cards to hand out to peers, vendors, recruiters and anyone else you may be interesting in networking with.
  • Comfortable Shoes 
  • Pre-Printed labels to stick on your AORN Surgical Conference & Expo 2014 publications, gifts and any other material you don't want to lose. Include your name and at least one method of contact, whether email or phone. 
  • Weather appropriate clothing: March/April in Chicago can be interesting. Average highs are 45 to 55 degrees and lows average 28 to 29 degrees. Bring warm layers you can take off as you enter the convention center and sessions. Gloves, scarves and hats are recommended. 
  • Bring all of your confirmation e-mail, receipts & paperwork: we suggest gathering all of your information prior to leaving & putting it all in one folder for easy access while traveling. Make sure to keep this folder in your carry-on, so that you do not misplace it.

The primary parking lot for the West Building is LOT A. 

Transportation from the airport:

GO Airport Express offers airport shuttle services between the Chicago area locations and O’Hare and Midway Airports. Shuttles depart from both Airports every 15 minutes for Chicago downtown and surrounding areas. GAE also provides shared-ride van transportation to and from both major airports. Make your airport shuttle reservation online or call (800) 284-3826. Don’t forget to use your 10% discount code: “AORN”. 

ADVISORY:The Shamrock Shuffle, an 8K for Chicagoans, will take place in Chicago on Sunday, March 30th. It will begin at 8:30am and some roads may be closed. If you plan on taking a taxi or another form of public transportation, allow yourself extra time to commute to McCormick Place. Shuttle service will not be affected.

Shuttle buses

Shuttle bus service is provided between official AORN hotels and McCormick Place. Shuttles will operate on a peak schedule beginning on Saturday, March 29 through Wednesday, April 2. A shuttle bus schedule is available in the Annual Conference Program and in a shuttle flyer. Additional fliers will be available at the Information Desk at McCormick Place. Look for signs in each hotel lobby with schedule information.

Attendee Materials

If you received your badge materials in the mail,  please proceed to the Bag Pick-Up station, located on Level 1 by Room W183, to get your official conference bag. Your conference bag will contain a plethora of important information and resources. You may also visit the Registration area located on the Level 3 Central Concourse for additional registration assistance. 

Be sure to keep your badge with you at all times while in the Convention Center for easy access to the Conference Connection Center (where you can submit evaluations for CE credit), the Exhibit Hall, and education session rooms.

Expedite your check-in

Bring your registration confirmation e-mail with you to the conference to speed up your check-in process. Simply scan your confirmation at the registration counter to receive your bag and check in. If you have misplaced or accidently deleted your registration confirmation e-mail, contact:

First-Time Attendee Orientation

The First-Time Attendee Orientation will be held on Sunday, March 30, from 7:00am until 8:30am, in room W375e. Come and learn details on how to get the most out of your annual conference experience and connect with mentors who can answer all of your questions. If you have already registered for the annual conference, contact the AORN Customer Service Department and they can update your registration to include the First-Time Attendee Orientation.

Get Involved with the Business of AORN

Delegates are any voting members in good standing who attend Surgical Conference & Expo 2014. If you are an eligible, voting member of AORN and not serving as a Chapter Delegate or Delegate Chair, you will be automatically designated as a Delegate and may attend all business meetings and vote. Check your program for times and locations.

Use our headphones or bring your own and select from four live or four repeated sessions playing at the same time.  Look for the Education Hub icon throughout the Program Books schedule for a listing of live and repeated sessions being broadcast. Extended Repeat Sessions

You can choose from four repeat sessions across several timeframes and earn additional contact hours by attending repeat sessions.  New this year, repeat sessions have been added from 7-8 am Monday through Wednesday in addition to throughout the week.

Real Time Education Session Polling

We will be using a polling app that will allow you to ask questions and respond to polls in real time throughout the session using your mobile device. Using your web browser, type in the polling app URL aorn.cnf.io. 

Polling will be available for all sessions held in Rooms W183 and W184 on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The URL will be posted on the screen inside the session room.

Speed Networking Event:

There have been several changes to the education schedule since the distribution of the brochures. Please review the Conference Program and Exhibit Guide included in your attendee bag, carefully when selecting the sessions you wish to attend.

Education Session Handouts

All registered attendees have access in advance and for 30 days after the annual conference to available Education Session Handouts. To download your handouts, visit the Surgical Conference & Expo online community on OR NurseLink. Remember to print and bring the handouts with you to the conference for the sessions you plan to attend as no printing will be available on-site.

The handouts will be posted to the AORN Live Learning Center (LLC) hosted by Multiview Media. Handouts will continue to be uploaded to the LLC as they become available by the speakers throughout the time leading up to the Annual Conference.


Over 300 posters will be displayed at the Annual Conference. More information can be found in the Poster Sessions Guidebook you receive in your attendee bag. 

In addition to the posters being displayed at the Annual Conference, poster authors who agreed to share their posters online now have them at here. Virtual posters will become available Saturday, March 29th. Notes and bookmark tools in the virtual poster gallery will create a personalized summary of the poster information for you to share with your colleagues or to reference as a concise summary of the great posters you saw at the Annual Conference.

To purchase your 2014 Annual Conference content, visit the annual conference Education Session Recordings Counter on the Level 3 central Concourse, located near the Bookstore. If you purchase the session recordings solely to earn contact hours, your best option is the Online Access. If you wish to share sessions with your staff, the DVD may be passed around or used for group training. However, only the original purchaser of the product can earn contact hours.

ConKerr Cancer Pillowcases

AORN and the Pediatric Specialty Assembly would like to thank members in advance for participating in this year’s ConKerr Cancer’s pillowcase project “A Case for Smiles”. There will be a bin available for members to drop off pillowcases near the Attendee Services structure located on Level 3 between the General Session room and the Connection Center. To comply with hospitals, all pillowcases should be freshly laundered and secured inside of a re-sealable plastic bag. 

Race for Patient Safety (5K Run/3K Walk)

Tuesday, April 1, 2014 I Grant Park

Enjoy a fun run with colleagues and friends along the historic Grant Park. A traditional finish line will await runners and walkers with individual timing posted after the race.

The course begins at Upper Hutchinson Field on the west side of Grant Park, located one block from Hilton Chicago. This course is a combination of going through Grant Park while incorporating both the museum campus and the southern part of Monroe Harbor. Register online or visit AORN Foundation Booth.

The IHP Specialty Assembly Serenity Room has returned! The IHP SA has sponsored a Serenity Room at AORN Conferences in past years going back 10 years ago.  Make plans to visit the Serenity Room in Room W176a.  

The IHP SA is dedicating this year’s Serenity Room to all Military and Veterans past and present. All AORN members are welcome to come and walk a labyrinth or simply relax and recoup as there will also be soft relaxing music and aromatherapy.

Education Session Handouts

Sessions held at different events have varying requirements and vary in length, but most concurrent sessions are 60- or 90-minutes in length. You may submit for one or more conferences and/or categories, but if you have a submission for a 60-minute session and a similar proposal for a half- or full-day session, we suggest you submit them separately 

The deadline for 2015 Surgical Conference & Expo education session proposal submission is May 23, 2014. If you have any questions or concerns regarding Education Session Proposals, encounter any problems with this site, or would like to share suggestions for improvement, please contact Susan Love. 

Call forPoster Abstracts

Posters are an effective method of communicating timely and original work in a public forum. They represent ideas in a graphical format, are interactive, and facilitate productive discussion between poster authors and interested colleagues in the perioperative profession. Posters share the actions and ideas that are successful in your facility with perioperative nurses around the world. 

The deadline to submit poster abstracts for the 2015 AORN Surgical Conference & Expo is October 3, 2014. If you have any questions or concerns regarding poster abstracts, please contact Beth Gabrysiak.
