AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2020 FAQs

Following the difficult decision to cancel AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2020, AORN has received many kind letters of support and we are very grateful to those of you who have taken the time to write.

We have also received many questions, which we have collected and answered below.

If you do not find the answer to your question here, please contact us at Expo2020Inquiry@aorn.org.

  • Why did you cancel the AORN Global Surgical Conference & Expo 2020?
    • As you are aware, the World Health Organization declared on January 31, 2020 the coronavirus constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern.” The confirmed cases in Orange County led the Orange County Board of Supervisors to declare a local emergency and Orange County Health Officer to declare a local health emergency. Similarly, California Governor Gavin Newsome declared a State of Emergency for California on March 4, 2020.

In consideration of these declarations, the Global Surgical Conference & Expo, presented by the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses, scheduled to take place March 28 through April 2 at the Anaheim Convention Center, was cancelled by the AORN Board of Directors on March 6.

This is the first cancellation of the annual conference in the history of the event, which has been going on for 67 years.
  • Will you be refunding registration fees, including the Pre-conference Workshops, the Leadership Summit, ASC Summit?
    • All registrations, including Individual, Group and Facility registrations, for AORN Expo 2020 have been cancelled and you can expect to receive a full refund of fees paid within two weeks. If your original form of payment is unable to receive the refunded fees, please contact us at aorn@mcievents.com.
  • How can I cancel my hotel room reservation?
    • All attendee and exhibitor reservations booked through AORN’s housing partner, MCI, have been cancelled. If you paid a one-night deposit to MCI, a full refund will be processed. If your original form of payment is unable to receive the refund, please contact aorn@mcievents.com.

    • If you booked outside the AORN block, you should contact the hotel directly. This letter may help you in your efforts to cancel and receive a complete refund.
  • Are you refunding the Foundation Night of Stars, T-shirt costs, or registrations for the Steps to Health Challenge?
    • Yes, we will provide 100% refunds.
  • May I donate my Foundation-related fees to help the AORN Foundation in supporting the nurses who make surgery safe?
    • We appreciate your generous consideration for the ongoing need to continue supporting the nurses who make surgery safe. The best way to do this is to make an online donation after your Expo costs are refunded. Thank you for your support.
  • Are you refunding flight or other travel costs?
  • Can you help with Disney tickets?
    • Disney will be providing refunds for tickets purchased through the AORN conference ticket site. To request a refund, please call (714) 520-7053 from 8:00AM – 5:00PM (PST) Monday-Friday.

  • Are you refunding entertainment costs?
  • I do not agree with the decision to cancel Expo 2020. Who can I talk to about this?
  • Will Expo 2020 occur later this year or be held virtually?
    • We are currently considering all options regarding virtual opportunities; we do know at this late date we will be unable to secure a venue large enough to accommodate the size of our in-person conference.
  • I was going to present at Expo, should I still submit my presentation (PowerPoint, PDF, or handout)?
    • Please submit your PowerPoint and handout. We are considering all options related to virtual opportunities.
  • My poster was accepted, should I still upload the poster for electronic display?
    • Please upload your poster. We will contact you regarding its display within three weeks.
  • Will exhibitors be refunded for booth space or sponsorships?
    • AORN Expo 2020 exhibitors and sponsors will be contacted with further information as soon as possible. We want to work through the various processes so this is done as efficiently as possible. Please contact Expo2020Inquiry@aorn.org if you have additional questions.
  • I am a grant recipient, who should I contact about next steps?
    • The AORN Foundation will be sending follow-up information regarding grants previously awarded. If you have questions in the meantime, you may direct them to foundation@aorn.org.
  • What will happen with the silent auction items I donated?
    • All donated items for the auction will be used in a re-scheduled event that is being planned for a later date. Any additional questions may be directed to foundation@aorn.org.
  • Will AORN continue with the other education seminars and workshops this year?
    • We will continue to monitor the spread of coronavirus and will make determinations on an event by event basis. First and foremost, we are committed to our mission to keep patients and health care workers safe and maintain our values of communication, innovation, quality, and collaboration.
  • Will the voting continue or the process change?
    • There will be no changes to the voting process, or timing, and we encourage you to continue to support AORN leadership selection by reviewing candidates’ bios and voting. We sincerely hope you won’t let the cancellation of Expo impact your participation. You have until midnight, March 31 to cast your votes. Vote now.
  • How does AORN plan to conduct the business of the Association in place of Congress?
    • AORN is evaluating options for holding its annual membership meeting virtually and announcing the Board of Directors and Nominating Committee election results.
  • I’m a candidate for office, how will AORN support the campaign plans I had?
    • AORN is working with the Nominating Committee and they will reach out to all candidates.
  • Who do I contact with additional questions?
