Periop 101 Benefits & Tools

"I have used the Periop 101 course for years and have found that it establishes an excellent foundation for nurses new to the OR."

Colleges and Universities Are Now Implementing Periop 101: A Core Curriculum into Nursing Curriculum

Periop 101: A Core Curriculum program is currently implemented in several nursing school curriculums. Schools of nursing realize that invasive procedures are being performed in areas of the hospital such as ambulatory surgery centers, the cardiac catheterization lab, interventional radiology, and woman’s centers where ultrasound guided breast biopsies are performed. These specialty areas are underutilized potential clinical sites. For this reason, some schools of nursing have chosen to implement Periop 101 and they are looking to AORN and the Periop 101 program as the fundamental curriculum to incorporate because it is standardized, evidenced based education. The skills acquired in Periop 101 are basic competency skills that are transferrable across all disciplines of nursing. These include but are not limited to: aseptic/sterile technique, insertion of a Foley catheter, skin prepping, effective communication skills, assessment, teamwork, Universal Protocol, and proper patient positioning. Undergraduate nursing students must successfully complete an evidence based didactic component as well as a clinical component with competency skill assessments to successfully complete the program. This gives these graduate nurses the opportunity to compete for positions in invasive procedure areas including the operating room.

This can potentially have a huge impact on the future of perioperative nursing and AORN is very interested is fostering this trend.

If you would like more information on the Periop 101 program for your nursing school, college or university, or if you know of a school of nursing in your area that AORN should connect with, please contact Terry Schmidt, MSN, RN, CNOR.
