Central Sterile Supply Bill Introduced in Massachusetts
Publish Date: 11/18/2013
This fall Massachusetts Senator Stephen Brewer introduced a bill that would require certification and continuing education for central service technicians working in Massachusetts hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers. Senate bill 1886 has been referred to the Joint Committee on Public Health and was scheduled for a hearing on November 19, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. in Room B-1 at the Massachusetts State House.
AORN is supportive of efforts to enact legislation to require certification and minimum continuing education standards for central service technicians. Perioperative registered nurses rely on central service technicians to ensure that instrumentation and equipment used in medical and surgical procedures are properly cleaned, disinfected, inspected, and sterilized prior to patient use. AORN’s government affairs department will continue to monitor and report on the progress of Massachusetts Senate bill 1886.
