AORN continues to monitor the coronavirus status and has provided the tool kit below with regularly updated links to important resources to support decision-making in your perioperative practice.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends everyone follow everyday prevention practices during travel:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning agent.

The CDC does not recommend that travelers wear masks to protect themselves from the coronavirus. You may choose to wear a mask, but it is more important that you follow these everyday prevention practices. This situation is evolving and you can stay up to date with CDC’s travel health notices related to this outbreak.
