Ruth Plotkin Shumaker, BSN, RN, CNOR has a passion for AORN. As a member since 1977 she has served the organization extensively. She was elected as President of the Board of Directors from 1998-1999; served on the task force that formed the AORN Foundation in 1991; and was a member of the Foundation Board of Trustees for 10 years. She has been awarded several honors including the 2010 Award for Excellence and the 2014 Nurse Philanthropist of the Year. Ruth continues to bring new ideas and energy to the AORN to support the perioperative profession.
Recently, she was inspired by the collective dialogue at the 2015 AORN Surgical Conference & Expo to take action to involve the younger generation of nurses in AORN. Ruth worked with the Foundation to designate contributions specifically for nursing student memberships. The AORN student membership annual dues of $20 provides an incredible value to develop students’ career goals and empower them with knowledge.
Ruth said, “We need to encourage nursing students to work in the perioperative arena, and we need to support their membership in AORN. The student membership allows nurses to have a better understanding of AORN, local chapters, educational programs, the award-winning AORN Journal, research, the AORN Guidelines, government affairs, Expo, and networking.
One of my close industry colleagues, Frank Krimowski, was excited to be among the first to fund 10 student memberships. I wish to encourage you to donate funds specifically designated for student memberships. This is a way of giving nursing students encouragement, and it's a way of ensuring that nursing students become interested in AORN and perioperative nursing.
In order for this to be successful and sustainable, it requires our commitment. By supporting this initiative, you’re making one of the most important investments you can in AORN’s future. You’re supporting the future generation of perioperative nurses.”To learn more about making a gift to support student memberships, please contact the AORN Foundation at Foundation@aorn.org.
