AORN is supporting the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materials Management’s (IASCHMM) central sterile supply certification bill in New York this year. The bill would require certification of all central sterile supply personnel in New York hospitals and ASCs and will ensure working relationships among medical staff, nursing staff, and central sterile supply personnel to assure that all patient care needs are met. Many people are watching this certification bill as New York would be the second state after New Jersey to mandate certification of central sterile supply personnel if it passes. AORN provided its support for the bill after discussions with IASCHMM led to changes in the bill which recognize the important role of nursing, consistent with AORN’s Position Statement on Allied Health Care Providers and Support Personnel in the Perioperative Practice Setting. IASCHMM also plans to introduce certification bills in Pennsylvania and Ohio this year. AORN supports legislative efforts to require certification of central sterile supply personnel, provided the legislation includes a mechanism to ensure nursing input and collaboration with the central sterile processing department.
