Last fall Massachusetts Senator Stephen Brewer introduced a bill that would require certification and continuing education for central service technicians working in Massachusetts hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.
Senate bill 1886 is - and has been since last winter - in the Joint Committee on Public Health. In April, the bill was included in Study Order 2214. A study order is a means by which bills are sent back to Joint committees for further study or investigation.
Perioperative registered nurses rely on central service technicians to ensure that instrumentation and equipment used in medical and surgical procedures are properly cleaned, disinfected, inspected, and sterilized prior to patient use. Because AORN is supportive of efforts to enact legislation to require certification and minimum continuing education standards for central service technicians, AORN wrote a letter supporting Senate bill 1886 in July.
AORN’s government affairs department will continue to monitor and report on the progress of Massachusetts Senate bill 1886.
