AORN Board Approved 2015 Legislative Priorities

Published: March 2, 2015

The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses promotes and responds to legislative and policy issues that impact the practice of perioperative nursing and patient safety in the surgical environment. AORN works collaboratively with health care colleagues, organizations, and decision-makers to advance patient safety and health care improvements in all operative settings.

Based on recommendations from the National Legislative Committee and the President-elect, each year the AORN Board of Directors establishes legislative priorities for the Government Affairs department to pursue in legislative and regulatory arenas nationwide. The AORN Board of Directors approved the 2015 Legislative Priorities at their February meeting.

Over the past several years, the legislative priorities consisted of four broad categories with overlap and intersection. Based on feedback from AORN members, the National Legislative Committee and AORN Government Affairs staff, the legislative priorities are now broken out into six specific topics, which will provide more direct, concise and accurate messaging for AORN members, Government Affairs staff, and lobbyists as they interface with stakeholders and the public about AORN’s Legislative Priorities. The six legislative categories are: RN as Circulator, RNFAs, Workplace Safety, Patient Safety Culture, Professional Practice, and Health System Improvements.
