PharMEDium Services has unveiled a new way to order propofol: in prefilled, pre-labeled syringes for single-patient use.

The Lake Forest, Ill.-based company says it's the first pharmaceutical compounder to offer propofol in prefilled syringes for use in the operating room. The prefilled syringes are designed to help with compliance by assuring that all medication labeling requirements are met. The service "also eliminates provider-prepared syringe drawn up in a non-sterile environment and reduces waste with the use of less than the full vial amount when a smaller dose is needed," says PharMEDium.

The announcement comes amid an ongoing shortage of propofol injection and heightened scrutiny on injection practices at surgical facilities.
