GET CRAFTY When an item is unavailable, sometimes you can create your own working alternative that works just as well.

Nancy Yen Shipley, MD (@_NancyMD), an orthopedic surgeon at Multnomah Orthopedic Clinic in Portland, Ore., recently posted on #OrthoTwitter a unique hack she developed when handling a supply shortage. Her preferred brand of suture retriever that is made with corrosion-resistant steel and a nylon loop handle, has been on back-order for two years. She tweeted: “We’ve experimented with several alternatives and have come up with a cheap and working substitute: cerclage wire twisted with nonabsorbable, polyester surgical suture composed of polyethylene terephthalate.
